Fulbright Orientation: A Week of Warm Welcomes and New Beginnings in Bucharest

As I stepped off the plane in Bucharest, excitement and nervous anticipation filled the air. It was the beginning of my Fulbright journey, and last week marked the official orientation for the 2024-2025 cohort of U.S. Fulbright grantees. A week of introductions, learning, and meaningful connections was ahead, and I was eager to soak it all in.

The Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission gave us an incredibly warm welcome. Their kindness, professionalism, and dedication to the Fulbright mission were apparent when we arrived. Their care to ensure we felt supported throughout the orientation was nothing short of exemplary. Every interaction, whether during formal sessions or casual coffee breaks, felt like a genuine effort to make us feel part of a larger family.

Meeting the other Fulbrighters was truly a delight. It is rare to be in a room with such a diverse group of people, each bringing their own unique experiences, research interests, and passions to the table. I was in awe of the various disciplines represented—each conversation was a window into a world of knowledge and curiosity. Whether it was discussing environmental studies, political science, or the arts, I quickly realized that these relationships would be invaluable for my professional growth and the richness they would add to my personal journey here in Romania.

One of the week’s highlights was the reception organized by U.S. Ambassador Kathleen A. Kavalec, which felt like the perfect culmination of the orientation. Surrounded by fellow Fulbrighters, Fulbright alumni, and dignitaries, it was an inspiring reminder of the long-standing collaboration between the U.S. and Romania. The ambassador’s words resonated deeply as Ms. Kavalec spoke about the importance of the work we were about to undertake and our role in fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. The elegant setting, along with the company of brilliant minds, made it a truly unforgettable evening.

Adding to the sense of wonder, we also had the opportunity to visit Cotroceni Palace, the official residence of the President of Romania. Walking through the halls of this historic building, with its blend of modern governance and deep-rooted history, was an awe-inspiring experience. The palace’s grandeur, coupled with its cultural and historical significance for Romania, left a lasting impression on me. It was a vivid reminder of the importance of the past in shaping the present—a theme that resonates strongly with the research I’ll be conducting here.

One of the highlights of the orientation was hearing from past grantees who shared their experiences and advice. It was reassuring to know that we would not be alone despite the inevitable challenges. Their stories were inspiring, offering a glimpse into the incredible opportunities Fulbright opens up. From navigating cultural differences to diving into meaningful research, their guidance reminded us of the importance of flexibility, patience, and an open heart.

During my week at the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission, I noticed a charming daily visitor—a curious little cat who seemed to have adopted the Commission as its second home. With her sleek fur and friendly demeanor, she would appear every morning, weaving between chairs and rubbing up against our legs, as if she, too, were welcoming us to this new chapter. Naturally, I could not resist naming her “Fulbright Cat.” She quickly became a source of joy for all of us, offering a moment of levity between our busy orientations and meeting schedules. Fulbright Cat seemed like a fitting mascot for our adventure—curious, resilient, and always exploring.

Beyond the formal sessions, we had time to explore Bucharest, a city brimming with history, culture, and energy. Wandering through its streets, from the grandeur of the old buildings to the charm of its hidden cafés, I felt the blend of Romania’s past and present, shaping the vibrant cityscape around me. Each corner I turned revealed something new—a reminder of the depth and beauty of the country I will be calling home for the next year.

As the week drew to a close, I could not help but reflect on the sense of purpose that had deepened within me. I am here not just to research and learn but to engage with Romania’s communities, to build bridges of understanding, and to contribute to something larger than myself. The orientation in Bucharest has set the tone for what I know will be a transformative year, and I am grateful to the Fulbright Commission for their unwavering support as we embark on this journey.

The first week may be behind me, but it is only the beginning. There is much more to discover, and I cannot wait to see where this Fulbright path leads.
