A Foggy Morning Hike on the Dawn Mine and Sunset Trail Loop

This morning, I laced up my hiking boots and set off to one of my favorite local trails, the Dawn Mine and Sunset Trail loop near Altadena, California. The weather was perfect: a cool, wet, and foggy morning with temperatures in the mid-60s. The mist made the surroundings mystical, making the hike even more enchanting.

The Dawn Mine and Sunset Trail loop is a 5.5-mile journey into Millard Canyon. It offers a moderately challenging route that rewards hikers with stunning views and historical intrigue.  Nestled deep in Millard Canyon, the Dawn Mine is a relic of the early 20th century. Once a successful mining operation, it now serves as a fascinating historical site for hikers. The mine operated intermittently from 1895 to 1954 and features hundreds of feet of tunnels, which were popular among explorers until the Forest Service closed most entrances in 2017.

As I started my hike, the fog created an ethereal atmosphere enveloping the trail in a serene silence. The first part of the trail was easy, following the paved Mount Lowe Road, which allowed me to warm up before the more challenging sections. I loved the transition from the open road to the narrow Sunset Ridge Trail, where the sounds of civilization faded, replaced by the calming rush of Millard Creek. This is my favorite segment of the hike.

The creek crossings were a fun challenge for my weakened knees. Each crossing felt like a small victory, adding a sense of adventure to the hike. When I finally reached the Dawn Mine, the fog had lifted slightly, allowing the sun to peek through and illuminate the ruins.

Exploring the mine was a highlight of the hike. I spent a good amount of time inspecting the remnants of mining equipment and peering into the dark entrances of the tunnels. The history buff in me was thrilled to imagine what life must have been like for the miners who once worked here. The mine’s history added a layer of depth to the hike, making it more than just a physical challenge.

The return via the Sunset Ridge Trail was breathtaking. The trail’s elevation provided stunning views of the Los Angeles basin, shrouded in a layer of morning mist. The switchbacks were taxing, but the scenery made every step worthwhile. I paused frequently to take in the panoramic views, the city below appearing like a distant dream.

One of the most memorable moments was standing at a vantage point, looking out over the fog-blanketed mountains and valleys. The sense of peace and solitude was overwhelming. Even though I encountered a few other hikers along the way, the trail felt like a personal sanctuary, a place where I could disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with nature.

Returning to the trailhead, I felt a sense of accomplishment. The hike perfectly blended physical exertion, historical exploration, and natural beauty. The Dawn Mine and Sunset Trail loop is truly a gem, offering something for every hiker, whether you are there for the workout, the history, or the views.

If you are in the Altadena area and looking for a hike that challenges both body and mind, I highly recommend this trail. Just remember to start early, bring plenty of water, and prepare for a journey that will leave you with lasting memories.
